Sara Erkan: Breaking Stereotypes and Thriving in IT

When I embarked on my professional journey as a junior accountant at WESTPOLE in 2021, I had mixed emotions. On one hand, I was excited to start my career. On the other, I was stepping into an industry which is very much a male environment with countless stereotypes. The IT world can seem daunting for young women, but I was intrigued by the challenge and eager to see if these preconceived notions held any truth.

My team was composed entirely of male colleagues. I questioned whether I would fit in or if I would have to work extra hard to prove myself. However, my fears were quickly put to rest. From the very beginning, I felt welcomed and supported, and I soon realized that gender was not a barrier in this environment. Today, my workplace has evolved into a more balanced space with more female colleagues. The inclusive and encouraging culture remains the same.

Beyond feeling comfortable at work, what truly makes my job fulfilling is the opportunity for growth. The IT sector is dynamic, and my role as an accountant within it has been an exciting learning curve. Every day presents new challenges and opportunities, and I am continually expanding my knowledge and skills.

Another aspect that is crucial to me is work-life balance. I recognize that previous generations had to fight harder to achieve the balance between their professional and private life. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted traditional work habits and forced companies to reassess how they operate. I firmly believe that maintaining a healthy balance is key to both professional efficiency and personal well-being.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, I reflect on the importance of recognizing and honouring all women, regardless of their profession or background. It is a moment to appreciate those who have paved the way for us, as well as those who continue to break barriers today. Personally, I think of women like my mother, to whom I’m so close. This day is a tribute to her strength and the resilience of women everywhere.

“Starting my career in IT was both exciting and nerve-wracking. Would I fit into a male-dominated industry? Would I have to fight for recognition? The reality was different. Breaking stereotypes is possible, and every step we take paves the way for future generations.”
